Learn About Size

Sometimes when you buy a mattress, you have to purchase a different size than what you’ve had in the past. This can mean upgrading to a larger mattress for more sleep space, or downgrading to a smaller size because of smaller room space. Whether you’re exploring a new size, or you’re purchasing your first mattress, getting the right size is important because making the wrong decision could be a costly mistake.

Below, you can find a short description of all of the mattress sizes we offer. If you’re not sure which size is best for you, give us a call at 1-800-227-0056 and speak with one of our friendly representatives who can quickly help you make the best purchase.

Twin mattresses measure 39” x 75”. Twin mattresses are an excellent choice for a child’s bedroom, as well as a guest room or any room where space is at a premium. Twin mattresses suit children perfectly, but growing teenagers and adults would benefit from a larger sleep surface.

Twin XL

Twin XL mattresses measure 39” x 80”, and they’re most commonly found in dorm rooms or other small rooms where adults sleep. Twin XL mattresses are a great choice for people who want to save space but are too tall to sleep in a twin size. Twin XL mattresses are a great option for guest bedrooms because when they are pushed together, they create a sleep surface that’s the same as a king size mattress.

Full mattresses are also called “doubles”, and they measure 54” x 75”. A full mattress gives a single sleeper more room than a twin, but it can be a little tight for two sleepers. When a full mattress is shared by two sleepers, each person has only 27 inches of personal space, which is about the same width as a crib mattress. Full mattresses are the same length as twin mattresses, so sleepers who are too tall for a twin should avoid a full mattress as well.

Full XL

Full XL mattresses measure 54” x 80”. A full XL is the same width as a full, but the length is extended by 5 inches to accommodate tall sleepers. Since the full XL doesn’t provide additional width, it’s still not a great choice for people who share a bed. Full XL mattresses are, however, an excellent choice for tall single sleepers. Full XL mattresses are also a great choice for teens, as they allow a lot of room for growth.

Queen mattresses measure 60” x 80”. They are an excellent choice for single sleepers who like a lot of space to move around. They are also a good choice for couples because they allow each sleeper enough personal space to sleep comfortably. While queen mattresses don’t provide sleepers with as much space as a king, a queen is a great choice for couples who want to conserve space in their master bedroom.

King mattresses measure 76” x 80”, and they are the optimal mattress size for couples who don’t have to worry about bedroom space. A king mattress is the same size as two twin XL mattresses pushed together, so each sleeper has the amount of room they would receive sleeping alone in a mattress of that size. This is a great feature for couples who enjoy more personal space when they sleep at night. King mattresses are also a great choice for parents who have young children who occasionally sleep in bed with them.

California King

California king mattresses measure 72” x 84”, and they are the perfect choice for tall sleepers who don’t want to sacrifice leg space as they sleep. A California king is 4 inches longer and 4 inches narrower than a standard king. Tall sleepers will gain more from the added length than they’ll lose in the narrower width, so tall sleepers should focus their search on mattresses of this size.

After you decide which size will best suit your needs, then you can begin to determine what type of mattress you’d like, and which level of comfort will suit you most.

Please note that all mattress manufactures work on a 1-inch tolerance, meaning there may be slight (1 inch at most) variation in size from one mattress manufacturer to another.
